Hello!

My name is Eva. I am a wife, a mother of three children, a DONA certified Birth doula, a PBi certified Placenta Encapsulation Specialist, and the owner of Gift of Life – Vancouver Doula and Placenta Encapsulation Services.

Before having children, I obtained the Master of Applied Science degree from UBC and became a water resources professional. I am passionate about promoting public health and providing safe drinking water to the community.

After my own childbirth in the early 2010’s, I became fascinated by the birth physiology and discovered my passion in serving the women and families. I bring a warm, intuitive, and professional approach to my work as a doula. And I work hard to ensure that my clients have a positive memorable birth experience.

Drawing upon my professional training and personal life experience, I trust in each woman’s inner strength to birth her baby. Although I am an advocate of natural childbirth, I know that a woman can also have a positive birth experience whether she elects or needs a caesarian section. I believe the secret lies in three key principles: knowledge, choice and confidence.

My favorite part of being a doula is nurturing women as they transform into mothers. To witness a child’s birth is something that I deeply cherish and am grateful to experience each and every time.

Q&A

A doula is an experienced and professionally trained woman who helps other women during labor and birth. Childbirth is a challenging and amazing experience. It brings not only the birth of a sweet baby, but also the birth of a mother. Doula supports birthing mothers to trust their instincts, communicate effectively with their birth team, and tap into their inner strength to achieve the births they desire. As a doula, I bring a caring heart, a growing body of knowledge and experience, and a bag of treats that I’ve found helpful.

Prior to labor, doulas assist women and their families in obtaining information and making informed decisions that will enable the mother to pursue and achieve the birth she desires.
In the active stages of labor, doulas serve and support women and their birth partners continuously with the emotional and physical support of childbirth.
Following the birth, doulas make sure the new mother feels supported during the postpartum procedures and discuss any of the questions the family has about the birth or labor.

Hiring a doula means having 24/7 access to professionals experienced in pregnancy and childbirth.
Doula serves as a bridge of communication between women, partners, and their midwife/doctor so that they can make the best decisions for their families.
Studies have shown that mothers who have doula request less pain medication, have shorter labors, and are less likely to birth by a c-section.
Doula helps preserve the memory of the birth experience.

Initial Meet-up and Greeting:
I will meet with you and your partner in a 1-2 hour consultation before labor at a public place (such as a coffee shop) to become acquainted, explore your health, as well as discuss breastfeeding, your fears or concerns, your birth plan and expectations, and to plan how we might best work together. We also discuss your best ways of coping with pain and fatigue and how you and your partner foresee working together. Once the $200 deposit is paid, I will be on call 24/7 to answer your questions.

During Labor:
When you’re in the early stages of labor, I stay in touch with you by phone to help you cope with the pain and decide when to go to the hospital. Once you are admitted, I will meet you at the hospital, and I will help you communicate with the medical staff and make sure that you have the information you need to make informed decisions as they arise in labor.

I am also there to help you stay positive. I provide reassurance, encouragement, and perspective to you and your partner, and I make suggestions for labor progress and help with relaxation, positioning, and other techniques to ease the labor pain for comfort.

After Birth:
I will stay with you for 1-2 hours after birth, until you and the baby are comfortable and settled in and your family is ready for quiet time together. I can also help with initial breastfeeding. During your hospital stay, I will still be available by phone for any questions or concerns you might have. We will arrange one postpartum visit at your home to see how you and your baby are doing. During the visit I will go over the birth experience, baby care, self care, and breastfeeding, etc.

Placenta Encapsulation

Q&A

Placenta Encapsulation is a modern process to make this natural, nutrient-rich organ into small capsules that are clean and easy to take. Using the Traditional Chinese Method (TCM) of preparation, the placenta is washed, steamed (with warming herbs), dehydrated, powdered and placed into capsules. The steaming process eliminates bacteria & pathogen and adds Yang (hot) energy that tonifies the placenta. The whole process takes 36-48 hours.

With your health and safety at stake, you need to be sure who you are trusting your placenta to.
I am a Certified Placenta Encapsulation Specialist and Mentor by PBi, the largest and most recognized research and training organization in US. I follow the Traditional Chinese Method (TCM) of preparation, which steams the placenta at 100° C to eliminate any bacteria and pathogen.
I have completed the Bloodborne Pathogen Training Course and obtained a current BC Food Safe Certificate. The preparation process adheres to the safety standard set by the BC Regional Health Authorities for food preparation.
Each placenta capsule is prepared with knowledge and love, providing you the greatest quality and care you can ask for.

I am a Certified Placenta Encapsulation Specialist by PBi, which is the largest and most recognized placenta encapsulation organization in the world. I am knowledgeable in the principals and benefits of placentophagy and can answer the questions that you may have. I adhere to the standards for sanitation and safe food handling. All equipments, if not disposable, are thoroughly sterilized between each use. All materials used meet food grade standards. I treat the placenta sacredly, and I will focus on honoring the work it has done to nourish your baby, while preparing it to continue its work nourishing you.

Your placenta will be prepared following the Traditional Chinese Method (TCM). This includes gentle handling of the placenta, cleansing in clean water, careful drainage of the blood vessels, steaming with warming herbs, dehydration and powdering. Then your placenta will be encapsulated in vegetarian capsules.

I encapsulate one placenta at a time, so there is no risk of cross contamination. I do not pick up a new placenta until the previous encapsulation has been completed and the capsules have been delivered. In the rare case that two clients deliver their babies on the same day, the latter client needs to wait for up to 24 hours until the previous placenta capsules have been delivered.

YES! GBS is a bacteria and bacteria is destroyed at high temperatures. I have always and will ONLY provide Traditional Chinese Method (TCM) of preparation. It involves a steaming process that allows the placenta to reach over 100°C temperatures to destroy any type of bacteria that may be present in the placenta or may have been present in the vagina or birth canal. I have always encouraged moms to seek certified specilists who have food safety training and follow stringent TCM method. Raw encapsulation method dehydrates raw placenta under 70°C. It does not meet food safty requirement and is not recommanded.

"Eva was incredibly supportive leading up to, during and after delivery of our baby girl. We were so grateful for when things didn’t go as planned with my birth, she was able to employ skills that avoided me requiring a C-section. If we are lucky enough to have a second baby we will be calling her again."

Years from now when your child is no longer a baby, I’d like for you to be able to look back on this time and feel great about yourself and your experiences. You are doing powerful things right now: growing and birthing your baby. It is my wish that you feel well supported during this time.   ~ Eva Li
